End of Year Book Survey 2017

It's time again for the annual end of year survey that Jamie @ The Perpetual Page-Turner hosts to reflect back on the books we've read throughout the year.

This year has been a pretty good bookish year. I didn't read as much books in 2017 as I did in 2016 but overall I read more that I really loved so yay! ♥

Number Of Books You Read: 122
Number of Re-Reads: 1 (Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer)
Genre You Read The Most From: Nonfiction

1. Best Book You Read In 2017?

The Woman Who Would Be King by Kara Cooney, a biography about Hatshepsut's rise to power in ancient Egypt. Super fascinating and simply phenomenal!

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t?

The Upside of Unrequited by Becky Albertalli. Don't get me wrong... I rated it three stars and I did enjoy the book but I just didn't love it. I liked the characters but the story wasn't the best in my opnion.

3. Most surprising (in a good way or bad way) book you read?

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff. It was surprising in a good way because when I initially bought it this summer I never expected to become so obsessed with this book and the world that the author created. I've also read Godsgrave and I didn't love it as much as Nevernight but I still thought it was pretty damn amazing.

4. Book You “Pushed” The Most People To Read (And They Did)?

This is always a tough question for me because I don't really "push" people to read certain books but I'm always recommending any book by Eoin Colfer, especially Artemis Fowl (did you hear about the movie casting?!) and Airman, which is a very beautiful story.

5. Best series you started in 2017? Best Sequel of 2017? Best Series Ender of 2017?

Best series startedLost Souls series by Avie Adams
Best sequel ► Scalding Ice and Goldfire by Avie Adams {My review}
Best series enderEagles in the Storm by Ben Kane

6. Favorite new author you discovered in 2017?

Avie Adams, author of the dark fantasy series "Lost Souls"Website

7. Best book from a genre you don’t typically read/was out of your comfort zone?

Two Boys Kissing by David Levithan. I don't read a lot of YA contemporary books anymore but I really enjoyed this one. I've always enjoyed this author's books so it wasn't a big surprise that I ended up loving Two Boys Kissing.

8. Most action-packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year?

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff. Again this book but damn... I was so hooked and it definitely was action-packed, thrilling and unputdownable!

9. Book You Read In 2017 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year?

Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer. This is probably not a surprise since I re-read it every year at least once. I also plan on re-reading Airman

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2017?

The Indigo Girl by Natasha Boyd. I'm just in love with this cover. So very beautiful and blue! {My Review}

11. Most memorable character of 2017?

Hatshepsut from The Woman Who Would Be King. Of course she isn't a "character" since the book is a biography about a real figure in history but Hatshepsut is definitely the most memorable person I have read about this year. She seemed like such an amazing and driven woman who did something no woman ever did before in ancient Egypt—become King, and ruling for almost 22 years in total.

12. Most beautifully written book read in 2017?

The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo. Do I even have to explain this one? The stories in this book were each and every one so beautifully written. I loved them, especially the final two.

13. Most Thought-Provoking/ Life-Changing Book of 2017?

A Charm of Finches by Suanne Laqueur. This author always manages to create the most thought-provoking and tear-inducing books. Last year I answered this question with her book The Man I Love. This year it's A Charm of Finches. So. Highly. Recommended. {My Review}

14. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2017 to finally read?

Iron Man: The Gauntlet by Eoin Colfer. I should've read it in 2016 but I just didn't get around to it (why though...) but I ended up loving it (duh). {My Review}

15. Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2017?

"I once slapped a coffee out of a guy's hand on the subway because he was breathing into the cup before every sip. It was like sitting beside Darth Vader on his break. And I'll tell you something else: three people applauded." — Screwed by Eoin Colfer

16. Shortest & Longest Book You Read In 2017?

Shortest ► James Cook: A Life From Beginning to End by Hourly History — 34 pages
Longest ► The Book of Life by Deborah Harkness — 703 pages

17. Book That Shocked You The Most

Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff. That motherfucking ending.

18. OTP OF THE YEAR (you will go down with this ship!)

Pim and Elder from the Dollar series by Pepper Winters. The most perfect OTP!

19. Favorite Non-Romantic Relationship Of The Year

Leila and Dariya from The Merchant's Pearl by Amie O'Brien. I loved their friendship because in the situation they were in they could've easily been rivals but they weren't. Why can't we have more relationships like this? {My Review}

20. Favorite Book You Read in 2017 From An Author You’ve Read Previously

Letters to the Lost by Brigid Kemmerer. This also happens to be my new favorite book by this author. Brigid never ever disappoints!

21. Best Book You Read In 2017 That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else/Peer Pressure

Romancing the Duke by Tessa Dare. Alyssa from The Eater of Books recommended this title to me and I'll never stop being grateful for this because I loved the book.

22. Newest fictional crush from a book you read in 2017?

Elder Prest from the Dollar series by Pepper Winters. He even rivals my love for Q Mercer. But don't tell Q I said that. :P

23. Best 2017 debut you read?

The Artist's Muse by Kerry Postle. I wish this book was more known by my fellow readers because it was really good and unique! {My Review}

24. Best Worldbuilding/Most Vivid Setting You Read This Year?

A Pocketful of Crows by Joanne M. Harris. This book was just so magical and tragic. I absolutely adored the vivid setting. It was really something special.

25. Book That Put A Smile On Your Face/Was The Most FUN To Read?

Doctor Who: Myths and Legends by Richard Dinnick. Because... Doctor Who! {My review}

26. Book That Made You Cry Or Nearly Cry in 2017?

The Alice Network by Kate Quinn. For the longest time this was my favorite book of the year until I read The Woman Who Would Be King. Sorry, Kate! But I still can't recommend this title enough. It is absolutely amazing and yes, it made me cry.

27. Hidden Gem Of The Year?

The Merchant's Pearl by Amie O'Brien. I know I already mentioned this book before but it's definitely a hidden gem. Everyone should read it! {My Review}

28. Book That Crushed Your Soul?

Lord of Shadows by Cassandra Clare. As usual with Cassie Clare books it basically destroyed me. Especially with the ending... :(

29. Most Unique Book You Read In 2017?

Scalding Ice and Goldfire by Avie Adams. This book (and series) is definitely the most unique (in the best way possible!) I loved it so much!

30. Book That Made You The Most Mad (doesn’t necessarily mean you didn’t like it)?

A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas. I absolutely loved this book but it also made me mad because Tamlin still acted like a douchebag. I think this is the exact same answer I gave to this question last year. Hmm... LOL

1. New favorite book blog you discovered in 2017?

I have a couple of new favorite book blogs:
Flylef - Romi Reads - Darkest Sins

2. Favorite review that you wrote in 2017?

I always enjoy the co-reviews I do with Christina from Booklover's Tea Party. This year we did four co-reviews:
3. Best discussion/non-review post you had on your blog?

My Favorite Eras in History and Books Set in Them ♥

4. Best event that you participated in (author signings, festivals, virtual events, memes, etc.)?

I only went to boekenfestijn and boekenbeurs, both are book fairs here in Belgium.

5. Best moment of bookish/blogging life in 2017?

The moment when Eoin Colfer (my favorite author ever) commented on a picture I posted on Instagram, saying that Airman was his favorite, too. Huge freak out, guys... :D ♥

6. Most challenging thing about blogging or your reading life this year?

Since October I have been struggling with some medical issues that still aren't fixed so I haven't been able to blog regularly because of it. It has been and still is a challenge.

7. Most Popular Post This Year On Your Blog (whether it be by comments or views)?

10 Books I Plan On Reading While I'm On Vacation. This post did pretty well and yes I read all 10 books. ;)

8. Post You Wished Got A Little More Love?

Gosh... any post really. It really doesn't matter which one.

9. Best bookish discover (book related sites, book stores, etc.)?

Fairyloot! I already got my first box last year in December so technically I didn't discover it in 2017 but I've gotten a lot more Fairyloot boxes this year so I'm guessing it can still count.

10.  Did you complete any reading challenges or goals that you had set for yourself at the beginning of this year?

2017 Goodreads Reading Challenge

1. One Book You Didn’t Get To In 2017 But Will Be Your Number 1 Priority in 2018?

Feversong by Karen Marie Moning. I know, it's a damn shame I haven't been able to get around reading this book since it's one of my all time favorite series but I've been just too worried about everything that could happen in this book to read it. LOL

2. Book You Are Most Anticipating For 2018 (non-debut)?

My Dear Hamilton by Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie. I hope it's as amazing as America's First Daughter. But I'm pretty sure it will be.

3. 2018 Debut You Are Most Anticipating?

Sweet Black Waves by Kristina Perez. I'm not a 100% sure it's her debut novel but I'm really looking forward to it because it's inspired by the story of Tristan and Isolde.

4. Series Ending/A Sequel You Are Most Anticipating in 2018?

Queen of Air and Darkness by Cassandra Clare. The last book in The Dark Artifices trilogy. I just hope the author won't hurt us even more with this book like she did in the previous one. Have some compassion, Cassie!

5. One Thing You Hope To Accomplish Or Do In Your Reading/Blogging Life In 2018?

I hope to re-read the whole Artemis Fowl series, all 8 books and give them proper reviews.

6. A 2018 Release You’ve Already Read & Recommend To Everyone (if applicable):

Furyborn by Claire Legrand. This book was in November's Fairyloot box as a physical ARC and it was just beyond amazing. Strong female characters + amazing writing + scary angels + assassins = yassssss! ♥

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Top 10 Books I've Read in 2017

πŸ“š Top 10 Books I've Read in 2017  πŸ“š

Hi you guys, I'm back!!

First of all, HAPPY HOLIDAYS! πŸŽ„
Second, I'm still not totally a 100% well yet and stil struggling with some pain but I feel ready to start blogging again. Yay! I probably won't post as much as I did before but I'm just gonna see where things go.

So I figured what better way to come back to blogging than with a top 10 of my favorite books I've read in 2017. It was not easy making this post because I read a lot of great books. But in the end I managed to narrow it down to my ten favorites. πŸ˜

{ The books are randomly ordered }

The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco {My Review}
I read The Bone Witch as an e-ARC at first but I ended up loving it so very much that I had to buy myself a hardcover copy of it, which I did. No regrets!

Oh my gosh, you guys... this book... Phenomenal doesn't even begin to cover it. I've always been fascinated by Hatshepsut but even if she wasn't my favorite historical figure in ancient Egyptian history, this book turned definitely made her my favorite. Kara Cooney did a marvelous job with this book.

Scalding Ice and Goldfire is the third book in the dark fantasy series 'Lost Souls' that I've read and it was my favorite out all of them so far. Avie Adams is one amazing writer. This series is such a hidden gem.

The Alice Network by Kate Quinn {My Review}
For the longest time The Alice Network was my favorite book of 2017 until I read The Woman Who Would Be King. Sorry, Kate! But still, this book is really amazing. It's set in WWI and a few years after WWII and involves female spies. I loved this book so much. It was brilliant!

Furyborn by Claire Legrand
This ended up being an unexpected favorite of mine. I was lucky enough to receive a physical ARC of this book in my Fairyloot box of November and damn it was one amazing read. I think fans of SJM and fantasy at its finest will love it. Also, it gave me some serious Nevernight vibes!

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff
Another rather unexpected favorite read of mine. When I randomly picked the book up I didn't expect to be so absorbed by the story and the world created in it.

The Indigo Girl by Natasha Boyd {My Review}
As you all maybe know, historical fiction is my favorite genre and when one of my favorite authors wrote a book in this genre I didn't hesitate at the chance to read it. The Indigo Girl was so freaking good and well-researched, of course it ended up in my top 10 of 2017 books. And I still need to get myself a hardcover copy of it, but I definitely will at some point!

Indebted by Inger Iversen {My Review}
I think I read four books in 2017 by Inger Iversen, making her one of my most read authors this year, but Indebted was my favorite. I always love any of her books but I definitely have a soft spot for Trent and Teal's stories. If you're a contemporary romance fans, I'd highly recommend Inger's books!

Letters to the Lost by Brigid Kemmerer {My Review}
Brigid Kemmerer blew me away with Letters to the Lost. I don't read a lot of YA contemporary books so for one to make my top 10 of books read this year is a pretty big deal for me. I so badly need her next book, More Than We Can Tell. I'm sure it's going to be equally amazing!

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
I don't know why I didn't read The Night Circus sooner. It has everything I love in a book: historical fiction, circus, obscure magic and beautiful writing. It's also one of my top favorite books EVER and not just of 2017.

Honorable mentions:
The Celts by Alice Roberts
The Merchant's Pearl by Amie O'Brien

So that was my top ten of 2017. I'll be back next week for my end of year book survey!

What was your favorite book(s) of 2017?

6th Blogoversary! πŸ“š

Hi everyone!

I can't believe it's been one month since I posted last. I never went this long without posting. I'm not back to blogging because I still don't feel up for it. But... I really wanted to do a quick post today because it's my 6th blogoversary today. I can't quite believe it's been six years since I created my blog and started doing this thing. I've met so many awesome people through blogging... fellow readers and bloggers, amazing authors, publishers. I'm super grateful to you all! ♥

Sadly enough I can't do a giveaway right now but maybe once I'm back to feeling good and healthy I'll do one to make up for lost time.

And I also wanted to say that I miss everyone who has been commenting on my blog (you know who you are!) and I hope to chat with you all soon again. And as always you can always say hi to me on Twitter or Instagram.

Blogging Break (Last Update)

Hi again, everyone.

I already posted two updates before but this will be the last one for now. I'm not doing so well at the moment. I've been to the hospital's ER twice in less than a week because I've been in too much pain but they haven't been able to help me much or figure out what's wrong. So I don't know when I'll be going back to blogging. Just wanted to let you all know this.

Xoxo

Blogging Break Update

Writing this quick post on my phone. I went to the hospital tonight because I was in too much pain. They said I have a bladder infection so I won't be back to blogging just yet. Hopefully after I start taking the medication I'll feel better.

Miss you all!

Xoxo,
Stephanie

The Captain’s Rebel
C.B. Halverson
(Irish Heroines #1)
Published by: Entangled Publishing
Publication date: April 3rd 2017
Genres: Erotica, Historical, Romance

Land. Power. Influence. Mary O’Malley knows these are the only things that matter in her war-torn country. Determined to win back her ancestral home, she must embark on a journey across the Atlantic disguised as a cabin boy. But her ruse brings her under the control of a dangerous sea captain who demands from her the one thing she will never give—complete and total submission.
Captain Richard Grant runs a tight ship, and he didn’t claw his way up through the ranks of the Royal Navy to be undone by a headstrong Irish girl hell-bent on jeopardizing his mission and his crew. If she insists on dressing like a man, then she can take his punishments. He demands obedience, but his insatiable need for her leads to a complex game of sex, desire, and dominance not even he can control.
Awakened by the passion Grant stirs in her, Mary finds herself falling for the stern captain. But when her false identity leads to rumors of her spying for the French, she must choose between her love for Ireland and the man who commands her body—and her heart.
Only 99¢ for a limited time!

EXCERPT:
“What are you doing aboard my ship?”
I swallowed hard, my lip trembling as I fumbled for the words. I didn’t even know where to start, and my face burned as I tried to gather my thoughts. No matter how I told the story, it all seemed so ridiculous.
“Tell me!” he commanded.
“I’m searching for my fiancΓ©.”
He took a step forward, his boots thudding hard on the floor. “Your fiancΓ©.” He took another step, and I flinched. The ship rolled and tumbled beneath my feet, and I grasped onto the panels, my fingers digging into the polished oak planks.
“Are you mad?” His fists clenched at his sides, powerful and trembling.
“It would look that way, sir.” My eyes drilled into a tiny knot on the floor, willing myself to shrink in size so I could dive into it and scurry away like a little mouse. But his boots thundered forward, the small buckles making a sound like clinking chains.
“Are you in some sort of trouble? Is that it? Are you with child?” His voice softened, and I looked up, startled at the sudden change in his tone.
“No, sir.”

“Well, then?” he boomed.
I jumped, folding myself deeper into the corner of the room. What could I have possibly said to him in that moment? Telling Captain Grant that Johnny’s father had accused me of stealing, so I had to run away to consummate our marriage in order to clear my name and win back my homeland was perhaps not the best way to endear myself to him.
“There’s been…” I swallowed the lump in my throat. “There’s been trouble at home.”
Grant let out an exasperated sound, shaking his head and turning away with a curse. “You do understand you are aboard a ship with over seven hundred male sailors, correct? A woman has no place on a ship of the line bound for battle. I cannot guarantee your safety.”
“I know that, sir.”
“And due to the nature of our mission, I am in no position to turn us around.”
“Yes, sir.”
He shook his head, pacing the room. “You have endangered yourself and my men with your presence. I know officers who would hang you for treason against England for what you have done.”
“I suppose it’s a good thing I’m not English, then.” The words popped out before I could stop them, my latent nationalism waving a pitiful green flag in the dim light of the Captain’s chambers.
A muscle flickered in his jaw, and when he turned to me again, I nearly gasped at the rage in his bright eyes. All the blood drained from my face, and I bit my lip, willing my saucy tongue to hold still.
“You think this is some sort of game?” His eyes narrowed, and he pressed closer to me.
My courage fired back, and I straightened, raising my shoulders in a challenge.
His eyes flitted over me from head to toe, and he made a low sound in the back of his throat. “I should throw you overboard and let the fish eat at your rebel heart.”
“Better to die a rebel than live as a slave.”

Blogging Break

Hi everyone! ♥

I just wanted to do a quick post to say that I'm taking an unexpected blogging break for at least a week. I've started feeling unwell since mid last week and it's bothering me enough that I just can't focus on my blog right now. I have a pretty busy weekend coming up and I just wanna take some rest and make sure I'm better by then. I also won't be commenting as much on people's blogs sadly enough but I will try to catch up on posts when I'm better again.
I might return sooner or stay on a break longer depending on how I'll feel. I'll still be around a little bit on Twitter and Instagram if you wanna say hi or talk about books. :)

Thanks for understanding!

Stacking The Shelves: October 21, 2017

Stacking The Shelves is a weekly bookish meme hosted @ Tynga's Reviews & Reading Reality.

Bought:
A Sea of Sorrow: A Novel of Odysseus by various authors
The Nutcracker Reimagined by various authors
Maverick by Karina Halle

This week was such a good week for new releases. I bought three new releases that I'm super happy with.

As soon as I knew A Sea of Sorrow was coming I pre-ordered the book and it finally released this week. Of course I'm currently reading it. For those who don't know what the book is about here's a part of the synopsis: 'Six authors bring to life the epic tale of The Odyssey seen through the eyes of its shattered victims—the monsters, witches, lovers, and warriors whose lives were upended by the antics of the “man of many faces."'

The Nutcracker Reimagined looks to be amazing as well. It has some authors that I'm really excited to read their stories of. I hope I can read it when it's closer to christmas time or maybe a little before. It's still on sale for 99c if you wanna grab it as well.It's been ages, sadly enough, since I read a Karina Halle book but I knew I had to grab Maverick because it was also on sale for 99c (it's gone up in price now, though). And it's a standalone so yay!

Have you read any of these books or which ones do you think look interesting? Share your thoughts!

Have a great weekend, everyone! ♥

The Murderer’s Maid by Erika Mailman
Publication Date: October 30, 2017
Bonhomie Press
Hardcover; ISBN-13: 978-0997066449
Genre: Fiction/Historical/Mystery

Bram Stoker Award finalist Erika Mailman brings the true story of the brutal murder of Lizzie Borden’s father and stepmother into new focus by adding a riveting contemporary narrative.

The Murderer’s Maid interweaves the stories of two women: one, the servant of infamous Lizzie Borden, and the other a modern-day barista fleeing from an attempt on her life.

Trapped by servitude and afraid for her own safety, Irish maid Bridget finds herself an unwilling witness to the tensions in the volatile Borden household. As Lizzie seethes with resentment, Bridget tries to perform her duties and keep her mouth shut.

Unknowingly connected to the legendary crime of a century ago, Brooke, the illegitimate daughter of an immigrant maid, struggles to conceal her identity and stay a jump ahead of the men who want to kill her. When she unexpectedly falls in love with Anthony, a local attorney, she has to decide whether to stop running and begin her life anew.

With historical detail and taut, modern storytelling, Erika Mailman writes a captivating novel about identity, choices, freedom, and murder. She offers readers a fresh perspective on the notorious crime and explores the trials of immigrants seeking a better life while facing down fear and oppression, today and throughout history. Intelligent and detailed, The Murderer’s Maid is a gripping read from beginning to bloody conclusion.
